Youth athlete development programme
The SW7 Youth Athlete Development Programme is a long-term athletic development pathway designed specifically for athletes aged 10-17.
The programme is built around the understanding that young athletes should not train like adults – and that different stages of development require different training priorities.
The full pathway runs across 24 weeks and is broken down into progressive 6-week training blocks, allowing athletes to gradually develop movement quality, strength, speed, coordination and athletic performance safely and appropriately over time.
The pathway is split into 4 key stages:
• 10-12 Years: Learn To Move
• 12-15 Years: Build The Athlete
• 15-17 Years: Build For Strength
• 15-17 Years: Train With Intent
Each phase is designed around what athletes actually need at that specific stage of development.
The earlier phases focus heavily on:
• Movement quality
• Coordination
• Sprint mechanics
• Landing mechanics
• Athletic foundations
• Confidence in movement
As athletes progress through the pathway, the programme gradually develops:
• Strength
• Force production
• Speed development
• Power
• Reactive athleticism
• High-speed running qualities
Across all phases, athletes follow a consistent weekly structure:
• Monday – Total Body 1
• Wednesday – Skill Acquisition / Athletic Development
• Friday – Total Body 2
This creates structure and consistency while allowing the complexity, intensity and training demands to evolve appropriately as athletes mature.
Another key part of the programme is education.
Every phase includes detailed explanations to help athletes and parents understand:
• Why exercises are included
• What physical qualities are being developed
• How progressions work
• How the programme supports long-term athletic development
The goal is not simply to make young athletes train harder.
It’s to help them understand training, move better, build confidence, and develop the physical foundations needed for long-term sporting performance.
The pathway is designed to progressively move athletes from:
“Learning movement” → “Building strength” → “Expressing power and speed”
while aligning with long-term athlete development principles and the wider SW7 performance model.
The Youth Athlete Development Programme is designed for athletes aged 10-17 who want to build proper athletic foundations and develop the right way long term.
Whether the goal is:
• Improving sports performance
• Building confidence physically
• Becoming stronger and faster
• Reducing injury risk
• Preparing for academy or representative pathways
• Or simply learning how to train properly
This programme provides structured, age-appropriate training for every stage of development.
The programme is ideal for:
✅ Young rugby players
✅ School sport athletes
✅ Developing athletes across multiple sports
✅ Parents looking for safe, structured training
✅ Athletes lacking structure or guidance in their current training
No previous gym experience is required.
The programme is built to be progressive, coachable and accessible for all ability levels, with training tailored specifically to the athlete’s stage of growth and development.
For athletes progressing beyond the Youth Athlete Development pathway, the natural follow-on programme is the SW7 Rugby Performance Programme.
